City Deploys Massive Cleanup Force for May Day at Monas

The Jakarta Provincial Government has deployed 1,400 sanitation workers through its Environmental Agency to support May Day events at the National Monument (Monas) area on Friday (5/1), ensuring the site remains clean, safe, and comfortable for participants.

"We urge all May Day participants to dispose of waste properly, sort their trash, and help maintain public facilities,"

This year's May Day commemoration was expected to draw around 300,000 workers from various regions, with President Prabowo Subianto in attendance. Public service readiness, including sanitation, was a key government priority.

1,400 Personnel on Standby for May Day in Central Jakarta

Jakarta Environmental Agency Head Dudi Gardesi said the 1,400 personnel are drawn from Environmental sub-agencies across five administrative cities and the Water Body Waste Management Unit (UPSBA). They will work in two shifts, from 8 AM to 2 PM and from 2 PM until the event concludes.

"In addition to personnel, the Jakarta Environmental Agency has prepared various sanitation facilities placed around the Monas area, Monas park, and several parking zones such as Lapangan Banteng, Kemayoran, and the Gelora Bung Karno (GBK) complex," he explained, on Friday (5/1).

Dudi added that supporting facilities and fleets have also been deployed, including 18 road sweepers, 12 inorganic waste trucks, 12 compactor trucks, 6 transport vehicles, 112 dustbins, 23 toilet buses, 23 portable toilets, and 1,400 garbage bags.

Separate waste bins have also been provided at multiple points, consisting of biodegradable waste bins (food scraps), recyclable waste bins (plastic, cardboard, etc.), and residual waste bins.

The measure is intended to facilitate waste sorting at the source, making waste management more orderly and efficient.

"Keeping Jakarta clean is a shared responsibility. We urge all May Day participants to dispose of waste properly, sort their trash, and help maintain public facilities. With collaboration from all parties, Jakarta will remain clean, healthy, and comfortable for all," he highlighted.

He said May Day is not only a chance to voice workers' aspirations but also an opportunity to strengthen cooperation between workers, the government, and the public in maintaining the city.

He noted that this year's commemoration carries added significance as the Environment Minister has a background as a labor activist, reinforcing the message that labor and environmental issues can go hand in hand to improve public welfare.

"This year's May Day is a moment for collaboration across all sectors. We want to ensure the event runs smoothly and comfortably while keeping Jakarta clean. The spirit of workers' struggle should align with environmental awareness,” he asserted.
